Sardinia allocates €2 million for municipal recycling incentives
The Sardinia Regional Government has allocated two million euros to maintain the reward and penalty system designed to support the development of waste sorting and recycling across the region. This funding is intended to address the depletion of existing funds established at regional waste disposal plants.
The allocation from the 2026 regional budget will be transferred to the Cagliari Provincial Industrial Consortium to manage rewards for municipalities within its jurisdiction. The system links financial incentives and penalties to achieved recycling rates and the implementation of point-based pricing.
Sardinia's recycling rate reached 76.48 percent in 2024, a significant increase from 2.8 percent in 2002. The regional waste management plan aims to reach and maintain an 80 percent recycling rate by December 31, 2029. Additionally, the plan accounts for the activation of point-based pricing in the municipalities of Villaputzu and Orosei in 2025.
