Mediterranean archaeologists uncover ancient tombs and ritual sites
Archaeologists have made several significant discoveries across the Mediterranean. In Sardinia, a well-preserved “Giant’s Tomb” dating back nearly 4,000 years was uncovered at the Carrarzu Iddia site. This megalithic structure, built from trachyte blocks, belonged to the Nuragic civilization and features an unusual two-level burial chamber.
In northern Italy, excavations in the Etruscan city of Kainua revealed an ancient ritual well. The site contained nearly intact bronze artifacts, including female statuettes and a rare bronze bowl, which researchers believe were votive offerings dating to the 6th or 5th century BCE.
In Greece, a new study using strontium isotope analysis on remains from a 5th-century BCE mass grave near Athens has helped determine the geographic origins of 79 men found chained together. While their origins are clearer, the exact circumstances of their deaths remain a subject of debate.
Additionally, in Croatia, researchers re-examined Roman-era skeletons found in dried wells near the ancient city of Mursa. The findings suggest the remains may be linked to an epidemic rather than battle-related deaths.
