Sardinia political dispute erupts over car tax suspension

Michele Pais, a member of the Lega party and former President of the Regional Council of Sardinia, has criticized Regional President Alessandra Todde regarding the suspension of the car tax (bollo auto).

Pais argued that the approximately 40 million euros generated by the tax should remain in the pockets of Sardinian citizens and families rather than being under the control of the regional administration. He dismissed Todde's claims that these funds were necessary for improving healthcare, transport, and roads, calling such assertions a political tactic.

Pais noted that if the central government compensates for the lost revenue as announced, Sardinians would benefit twice: by keeping the 40 million euros and by having the region maintain its existing resources for public services. He highlighted that Sardinia currently has access to significant financial resources, including a cohesion agreement worth nearly 2.9 billion euros signed in November 2024.
