Sardinian political dispute over car tax amnesty

The implementation of a national car tax amnesty program has triggered political debate in Sardinia. Initially, Michele Pais of the Lega party called for regional clarity, questioning whether the Sardinia Region had met the necessary administrative requirements to participate in the facilitated tax settlement program for debts incurred between 2000 and 2023.

Following these concerns, political tension escalated as Regional President Alessandra Todde warned of a potential “financial catastrophe” regarding the impact of car tax exemptions on regional finances. This stance was met with criticism from center-right opposition members, including senators from Fratelli d'Italia. Critics argued that the Meloni government had already allocated 2.3 billion euros to compensate regions for lost revenue, accusing the Regional President of using the issue to spark controversy.

In recent developments, Michele Pais has intensified his criticism regarding the suspension of the car tax (bollo auto). He argued that the approximately 40 million euros generated by the tax should remain with Sardinian citizens and families rather than being controlled by the regional administration. Pais dismissed Todde’s assertions that these funds are necessary for healthcare, transport, and roads, labeling them a “political tactic.” He further noted that if the central government provides compensation as announced, citizens would benefit twice: by keeping the 40 million euros and by allowing the region to maintain existing resources for public services. Pais highlighted that the region already has access to significant funding, including a cohesion agreement worth nearly 2.9 billion euros signed in November 2024.
