Sicily declares one-year state of emergency following wildfires
The Sicily regional government, led by President Renato Schifani, has declared a one-year state of crisis and emergency following devastating wildfires that occurred in July and early August. The fires, fueled by extreme heat and wind, impacted urbanized areas and caused significant damage to buildings, forests, and agricultural and industrial assets. Initial damage estimates across eight Sicilian provinces are approximately 50 million euros.
To address the emergency, the regional government approved a 25 million euro relief package. This includes 15 million euros for Civil Protection interventions and 10 million euros for compensation to agricultural businesses. Authorities are currently conducting rigorous assessments to determine if a national state of emergency should be requested.
Across Italy, satellite monitoring by Isprae has detected over 1,070 large forest fires in a seven-month period, covering approximately 741 square kilometers. Meanwhile, other regions face environmental challenges: Piedmont has initiated procedures to request a state of natural calamity due to severe drought, and Lombardy officials have noted that current drought conditions do not yet meet the legal requirements for a formal state of emergency.
