Sardinia wildfires force evacuations and prompt aerial firefighting

Wildfires broke out in the Sardinian municipalities of Serramanna (area Su Fraigu) and Sarroch (area Sa Perda Scritta), scorching roughly a hundred hectares of farmland, cane fields and scrubland. Strong maestrale winds accelerated the blaze, threatening several rural houses, farm buildings and livestock pens.

The response involved the Corpo Forestale, local fire brigades from Cagliari, Iglesias and Sanluri, and civil‑protection volunteers. Aerial support included three regional helicopters, an additional helicopter from Pula, and two Canadair water‑bombers flown in from Ciampino, with further helicopters dispatched from Villasalto and Fenosu. Evacuation orders were issued for three of four dwellings in the immediate fire zone and a total of seven people were moved to safety. Firefighters applied retardant drops and continued containment efforts into the evening, while damage assessments began.
