Italy energy crisis: rising costs hit households and small businesses

An analysis by Confartigianato reveals a significant energy cost crisis impacting Italian households and small businesses. Between February and August 2026, domestic energy costs in Italy rose by 11.4%, a rate exceeding general inflation. The total national extra cost for energy is estimated at approximately 1.8 billion euros.

Regional impacts vary significantly. In Veneto, energy costs increased by 14.8%, with the province of Treviso seeing a 15% rise. Puglia families faced an additional 95 million euros in costs, ranking eighth nationally. In Piedmont, small businesses incurred 262 million euros in extra electricity costs over the last twelve months. In Sicily, fuel prices rose from 1.78 euros per liter in March to 2.39 euros in September, threatening the transport sector.

Small and micro-enterprises (MPI) are particularly vulnerable. Italian MPIs pay 17.9% more for electricity than the EU average, with the gap widening for businesses consuming less than 20 MWh. A major driver of this disparity is the fiscal and parafiscal component of electricity bills, which is 47.4% higher in Italy than the EU average. In the Pesaro Urbino province, over 76% of companies reported increased energy spending during the last semester.
