Sardinia's bicycle sector expands to 90 firms and 30,000 daily cyclists

The bicycle industry in Sardinia has more than tripled in four years, rising from 31 companies to 90 active firms, including 32 artisan workshops. The sector now employs over 250 people and sees about 30,000 cyclists on the island’s roads each day.

According to a report by Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna, the growth spans manufacturing, sales, repair, tour organisation and infrastructure services. Cyclotourists on average spend €130 per day, twice the €70 average for beach tourists, boosting local hotels, restaurants and retail. Sardinia offers over 3,000 km of cycling routes and 70 dedicated itineraries, with local authorities and EU green‑mobility funds supporting the expansion of bike lanes and safety campaigns.

Industry leaders highlight the sector’s role in broader economic areas such as construction, tourism and environmental sustainability, describing it as a new engine for regional development.
