Turkish Watermelon Harvest Expands Amid Heat Waves
In Sekili village, Yozgat Province, the watermelon harvest began under scorching temperatures of 34‑35 °C. Seasonal workers, many from Syria and Turkey’s Tarsus district, start at 07:00 and work until evening, loading harvested melons onto trucks for distribution across the country. Producer Sait Ayran noted that last year a seedless black watermelon variety from Sekili was exported abroad and attracted strong interest, prompting an expansion of the planting area by an additional 80‑100 dunams this season.
Meanwhile, in the high‑altitude districts of Bayat, Büyükköy and Küçüköy near Korkuteli, farmer Musa Solak cultivates a local “yayla” watermelon. He sells the fruit at 10 lira per kilogram, primarily to domestic markets, and expects a yield of about 250 tons from roughly 120 dunams. Solak highlighted the melons’ deep red color, high water content and a distinctive taste attributed to meltwater from mountain snow.
Both regions report rising demand for their aromatic watermelons, with Sekili’s produce reaching markets throughout Turkey and Korkuteli’s melons drawing interest from nearby provinces despite external offers.
