Sarnath inscribed as India’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site
The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh – where Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after enlightenment – was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on 26 July 2026. The decision was taken at the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea.
Sarnath becomes India’s 45th World Heritage property and the fourth in Uttar Pradesh, joining the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. The site had been on UNESCO’s Tentative List since 3 July 1998, ending a 28‑year wait for formal inscription. The designated property includes the Chaukhandi Stupa, Dhamek Stupa, Dharmarajika Stupa, Ashoka Pillar and other archaeological remains.
Indian officials hailed the recognition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the inscription celebrates India’s civilisational heritage, while Uttar Pradesh tourism minister Jaiveer Singh called it a historic achievement that will boost the state’s Buddhist circuit, international tourism and cultural‑heritage conservation.
