Sarnath in India Added to UNESCO World Heritage List

The ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh, north India, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming the 45th Indian site to receive the designation. The decision was announced on 25 July during the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Busan, South Korea. The inscription covers the Dhamek Stupa, the Chaukhandi Stupa and surrounding archaeological remains that mark the place where the Buddha delivered his first sermon.

The Sri Lanka Mahabodhi Society praised the recognition, thanking the Government of India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UNESCO Director‑General‑designate Khaled El‑Enany for supporting the heritage of the global Buddhist community.
