SASSA delays August grant payments for some beneficiaries and issues cancellation guidance
Some South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries will have to wait longer for their August grant payments because their profiles are under review. Payments are still scheduled for the Older Persons Grant on 4 August, Disability Grant on 5 August, Children’s Grant on 6 August, with all beneficiaries to receive payment on 7 August. SASSA warned beneficiaries not to panic, urged them to visit the nearest SASSA office during August to complete the review, and said failure to respond may lead to suspension or lapse of the grant under the Social Assurance Act. The review aims to remove ineligible persons, prevent fraud, and keep the beneficiary database up‑to‑date. Beneficiaries are notified by SMS and must report changes in marital status, address, income, travel abroad, or any other factor affecting eligibility.
SASSA also provides step‑by‑step instructions for cancelling a grant when a person no longer qualifies or wishes to stop receiving it. Cancellation can be done online for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant using an ID number and OTP, or in person at a SASSA office for other grants such as the Older Persons, Disability, Child Support, or Foster Child grants. Required documents include a South African ID and any supporting paperwork. Applicants should obtain written confirmation of cancellation and monitor their grant status to ensure payments cease.
