As the 2026/27 financial year begins, SASSA has released a staggered payment schedule to reduce congestion. However, Social Development Minister Dina Pule disclosed in Parliament that over 56,000 beneficiaries had their grants suspended during the first quarter due to ‘non-compliance with review requirements.’ While 5,231 beneficiaries were later reinstated, the suspensions have caused significant household hardship. New administrative reviews and strict means testing are disproportionately impacting pensioners. A half-year report indicates that pensioners accounted for 55% of all completed administrative reviews and 54% of all grants suspended due to incomplete reviews.
