Sassari implements new welfare program for free-roaming cats

The Municipality of Sassari and the local Asl have signed an agreement to manage and protect the city's free-roaming cat population. The project, titled ‘Control and management of births in the free feline populations of the Municipality of Sassari’, aims to coordinate actions for the welfare of street cats.

Key objectives of the initiative include increasing sterilization rates to control population growth, ensuring animal identification and traceability, and implementing health monitoring through vaccinations and parasite treatments. The program is set to run until mid-2027, with the possibility of extension.

Pierluigi Salis, Deputy Mayor and Assessor for Ecological Transition and Urban Decor, stated that managing the situation of free cats is a priority for the administration. The city has already established a convention with a private clinic and works with zoophile guards to rescue injured or traumatized animals.
