Sassari revitalizes historic centre with new piazza and community space

The city of Sassari has completed a €1 million renovation of Piazza San Donato, transforming the former traffic‑laden area into a pedestrian‑friendly square with benches, green oases, bike lanes, play zones and re‑organized parking. The inauguration on 5 August was attended by Mayor Giuseppe Mascia, Infrastructure and Mobility assessor Massimo Rizzu, former mayor Nanni Campus and representatives of the construction firm.

At the same time, the Michelangelo Pira space on Via Brigata Sassari, managed by the cooperative Liberitutti, hosted a public meeting and a “Festa d’estate” on 3 August. Residents were invited to share food and drinks, wear white for a festive touch, and discuss community values. The event received municipal backing from the Social Policies assessor Marco Camboni, reflecting the city’s broader plan to upgrade neglected urban areas and foster local association activity.
