Sata Holding seeks binding bids for Azores Airlines

Sata Holding, the Portuguese state-owned consortium, has shortlisted five bidders for the privatization of Azores Airlines. The holding company has requested that these interested parties submit binding offers by December 9.

The sale involves at least a 75 percent stake in the Ponta Delgada-based carrier. While the names of the five finalists remain confidential to maintain competition, previous rounds included eight applicants, with Binter and Icelandair mentioned as potential interests earlier in the process.

The divestment is a requirement of a restructuring agreement between Portugal and the European Commission. Following a 453.25 million euro restructuring aid package in 2022, the regional government of the Azores is mandated to transfer majority ownership to the private sector by the end of 2026. The sale includes specific conditions, such as a requirement to maintain employment levels for a minimum of 30 months.
