A five-story building used as a student hostel, known as ‘Hostel Daze’, collapsed in the Satya Niketan area of New Delhi on Sunday, September 6, 2026. The incident resulted in at least seven deaths and several injuries. The building, located near the Delhi University South Campus, was reportedly around 50 years old and had been undergoing basement renovations at the time of the collapse.

Preliminary investigations suggest that water accumulation in the basement and ongoing construction work may have contributed to the structural failure. Authorities noted that while the building was originally approved for only two floors, it had been illegally extended to five stories. The building lacked an approved structural plan, and no prior complaints regarding its condition had been filed with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

In response, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magisterial inquiry and directed strict action against those responsible. Police have arrested the property owner, Urmila Gupta, her husband Hariram Gupta, and their son Mahesh Gupta. Additionally, five MCD officials have been suspended for negligence. The government is now drafting a policy to mandate periodic structural audits and safety certificates for public-use buildings, including student accommodations and schools.
