Saudi Arabia activates Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition
The Saudi Ministry of Defense has announced the operational activation of the Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition (MMDC) following its third planning meeting in Jeddah. The coalition involves 39 participating countries, with 15 nations having signed a joint declaration and 13 countries having completed all national procedures to officially join the alliance.
To establish the coalition's leadership structure, it was agreed that the commander will be appointed from Saudi Arabia, while the first deputy commander will be from Pakistan. Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri has been designated as the coalition commander.
The MMDC is designed to strengthen collective maritime security, protect freedom of navigation, and safeguard global supply chains and energy routes. Its primary operational focus will be the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Aden. The coalition plans to facilitate intelligence sharing, joint maritime exercises, and coordinated naval operations among member states.
