Saudi Arabia announces operational start of maritime defense alliance

The Saudi Ministry of Defense has announced that the multinational Maritime Defense Alliance has entered its operational phase. Operating from its headquarters in Riyadh, the alliance is transitioning from its foundational stage to active duty, involving the deployment of military personnel and liaison officers from member states.

Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri serves as the commander of the alliance, while Pakistani Commodore Rashid Sheikh has assumed the role of deputy commander. Liaison officers from member nations and countries currently undergoing accession procedures have begun their duties.

The alliance aims to enhance maritime security, protect freedom of navigation, and secure international trade routes and energy supplies in the Red Sea, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden. These waterways are critical strategic corridors connecting Asia and Europe.

To date, 15 countries have signed the joint statement establishing the alliance, and 13 countries have signed the alliance charter. The organization focuses on unifying efforts, improving information exchange, and increasing response capabilities against maritime threats targeting commercial vessels and oil tankers.
