Saudi Arabia increases crude exports amid production drop and regional tension

Saudi Arabia’s crude oil exports rose 7.9% in August to 4.451 million barrels per day, reaching a five-month high. This increase occurred despite a significant drop in domestic production, which fell to 6.24 million barrels per day from 8.135 million in July.

Geopolitical instability in the Middle East, including the conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran, has disrupted traditional shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz. To mitigate these risks, Saudi Arabia has leveraged terminals on both the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf coasts to maintain export volumes. Saudi Aramco is also exploring expanding its international storage capacity to ensure uninterrupted supply.

Security concerns have escalated following drone attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure, including the Shaybah oil field and the Aramco headquarters in Dhahran. These incidents, attributed to regional tensions and Houthi activity, have contributed to volatility in global oil prices, with Brent crude trading above $111 per barrel.
