Saudi Arabia expands biomedical research and healthcare infrastructure

Saudi Arabia is expanding its biomedical and healthcare infrastructure as part of its Vision 2030 strategic goals. The King Abdullah International Medical Research Center plans to establish a specialized laboratory animal facility in Riyadh, alongside a biosafety level 3 laboratory. This new infrastructure is designed to support advanced biotechnology research and allow scientists to study specific infectious agents in controlled environments.

Parallel to these research advancements, the Kingdom is shifting its healthcare model from traditional treatment toward proactive risk management. By utilizing big data, artificial intelligence, and predictive analytics, the government aims to anticipate health risks and intervene early. This transformation includes significant financial investment, with approximately SAR 214 billion allocated to the health and social development sector in 2024, and over SAR 243.75 billion dedicated to comprehensive health infrastructure transformation, including the digitization of public health services.
