Riyadh airport attacks trigger widespread flight cancellations

Houthi rebels from Yemen have launched multiple missile and drone attacks against King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, as well as Aramco facilities in Yanbu and the Shaybah oil field. While the airport has officially reopened for commercial operations, many international carriers continue to suspend or postpone flights due to security concerns.

Major airlines including Lufthansa Group, Air France-KLM, Air India, IndiGo, and Etihad Airways have extended or implemented flight suspensions to or from Saudi Arabian cities. Delta Air Lines has postponed its Atlanta to Riyadh route until March 2027, and Cathay Pacific has delayed its resumption of service until January 2027. Data indicates that more than 80 percent of regularly planned flights to Riyadh have been canceled, with over 5,500 departures from Saudi airports affected since the strikes began.

The escalation has also impacted private travel, with rental prices for private jets to or from Saudi Arabia increasing by over 50 percent. In response to the attacks, European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas noted that the Houthis are committing “acts of terrorism” and suggested the possibility of designating the group as a terrorist organization, though this would require unanimous agreement from EU member states.
