Houthi attacks on Saudi aviation and oil infrastructure

Overview

The security situation in Saudi Arabia has escalated following missile and drone attacks by the Houthi movement, targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Aramco facilities in Yanbu, and the Shaybah oil field. These strikes have caused significant aviation disruptions and casualties, including an October 10 attack that killed 12 people and injured over 300, and an October 11 strike that killed one person and injured 11 others. On October 12, Delta Air Lines postponed its planned nonstop service between Atlanta and Riyadh until March 2027 due to the violence. Other regional carriers, including Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, Etihad, and EgyptAir, have also announced flight cancellations or suspensions to and from Riyadh. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a warning to U.S. airlines regarding safety-of-flight risks and potential navigation interference. On October 20 and 21, 2026, a new wave of attacks targeted critical infrastructure. An incident at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam resulted in two deaths—a Saudi citizen and an Indian resident—and eight injuries. In the eastern province, Saudi air defenses intercepted a drone targeting an Aramco-operated facility at the Shaybah oil field; debris from the interception killed a Nepali national and a Filipino national, and injured a Pakistani and an Indian national. While Saudi Aramco reported that operations at the Shaybah field were not affected, the attacks have driven global energy markets higher, with Brent crude rising above $110 per barrel. By October 24, flight disruptions extended to routes between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia, affecting approximately 22,000 passengers. Following the October 21 attack on King Fahd International Airport, Aden Airways cancelled several flights, reporting that one of its aircraft was damaged during the shelling. The airline stated it is conducting technical inspections and offering passengers the option to transfer bookings without fees or request full refunds.
