Saudi Arabia halts oil exports to Europe after pipeline drone attack FAST-MOVING
Saudi Arabia has suspended crude oil shipments to Europe and halted loading at the Red Sea port of Yanbu following drone attacks that damaged its strategic 1,200-kilometer East-West pipeline. The kingdom has attributed the attacks to Iraqi-based militias. The pipeline serves as a critical alternative route to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, which has seen significant disruptions due to regional conflict.
The disruption has caused immediate volatility in global energy markets, with Brent crude futures rising toward $108 per barrel and physical cargo prices in Europe exceeding $120 per barrel.
European buyers, most notably the Polish energy group Orlen, are urgently seeking alternative supplies. Orlen, which relies on Saudi Aramco for approximately 40% of its crude needs, is looking toward the North Sea, the United States, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Guyana to secure its refineries in Poland, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic.
While some officials suggest repairs could be completed in a few days, industry experts warn that the damage to pumping facilities could result in the pipeline being out of service for several weeks. To mitigate the loss, Saudi Arabia may increase exports through the Strait of Hormuz using “dark shipments” to obscure tanker tracking, a method already utilized by Iraq and the United Arab Emirates.
