Saudi Arabia plans major offensive to reclaim Bab el-Mandeb from Houthi rebels

Saudi Arabia and the internationally recognized Yemeni government are preparing a large-scale military offensive to reclaim strategic coastal areas from Houthi rebels. The operation, which could involve the mobilization of over 100,000 Yemeni government soldiers, aims to secure the Bab el-Mandeb strait and Red Sea shipping lanes following recent Houthi territorial gains, including the port of Mocha and Perim Island.

Reports indicate that Riyadh is considering two primary tactical scenarios: a concentrated strike focused on the Bab el-Mandeb area or a broader, multi-front offensive spanning provinces such as Taiz, Marib, Al-Bayda, and Al-Jawf. While the Yemeni government forces would lead ground operations under Saudi aerial cover, the United States has declined requests for direct combat involvement. However, the U.S. continues to provide intelligence and targeting data, having supplied information on more than 200 Houthi targets to Saudi Arabia in recent weeks.

This planned escalation follows a period of increased hostilities, including Houthi missile and drone attacks against Saudi territory. The World Food Programme has warned that the ongoing conflict is exacerbating a humanitarian crisis, noting that 74 percent of households in government-controlled areas currently lack sufficient food.
