Yemen political and humanitarian crisis

Overview

The political and humanitarian situation in Yemen remains critical, characterized by diplomatic friction, maritime security threats, and escalating displacement. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg has warned that the country is at risk of sliding into a “full-scale war,” noting that military confrontations have expanded across multiple fronts. In response to the military escalation that began in July 2026, Presidential Leadership Council President Rashed al-Alimi announced ‘Operation Dawn of Yemen’ to reclaim the capital, Sanaa. Military activity has recently intensified near the Bab al-Mandab strait as government-aligned forces, including the Southern Giants Forces and Dar al-Watan, push to secure the strategic waterway.

Humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate. President al-Alimi has highlighted the worsening crisis in Taiz, where approximately 1.5 million people face a blockade, and noted that over 250,000 people have recently been displaced from Houthi-controlled areas. On October 26, President al-Alimi inaugurated nine new humanitarian and relief projects funded by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) during a visit to Saudi Arabia. These initiatives target food security, water supply, shelter, and medical supplies in Taiz, Aden, Lahj, and Hajjah.

In Lahj, the humanitarian situation has reached a breaking point. On November 2, the Lahj Governorate's Higher Emergency Committee issued an urgent appeal for international intervention, warning that unprecedented waves of displacement from military operations in neighboring Al-Subayhah districts have exceeded the province's capacity to provide aid. The committee identified critical needs for food, tents, medical care, and clean water to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.
