Saudi Arabia sports events relocated or postponed due to Houthi attacks
Ongoing conflict with Houthi rebels has forced the relocation and postponement of several major sporting events in Saudi Arabia. The Global Champions Tour finale, which features a record prize pool of 11.25 million euros, has been moved from Riyadh to Verona, Italy. The tournament was originally scheduled to take place from November 18 to 21.
Additionally, the Six-Kings Slam tennis event in Riyadh has been postponed until December due to security concerns and the threat of escalation in the region. These disruptions highlight potential vulnerabilities in Saudi Arabia’s long-term strategy to use its Public Investment Fund (PIF) to host massive global sporting events and acquire international clubs. Experts suggest these security risks may challenge the kingdom's ability to present itself as a stable geopolitical and sporting powerhouse.
