Saudi Arabia suspends oil loadings at Yanbu port following pipeline attacks
Saudi Arabia has suspended crude oil loadings at the Yanbu port in the Red Sea and shut down its critical 1,200-kilometer East-West Pipeline following attacks attributed to Houthi rebels. The pipeline, which transports 4 to 5 million barrels per day—approximately 4% to 5% of global supply—was taken offline for safety after drone strikes.
As a result of the disruption, Saudi Arabia has notified European customers, including Poland, that certain crude oil deliveries scheduled for late September may be canceled or delayed. This has caused shipping prices to rise above $120 per barrel, prompting some buyers to seek alternative suppliers. Brent crude prices rose by 2.65% to $108.45 per barrel amid the uncertainty.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that the East-West Pipeline is expected to resume operations within a few days, though some industry sources suggest repairs could take several weeks. To mitigate the impact, Saudi Arabia is working with US military support to increase oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, potentially utilizing 'dark fleet' shipments to maintain export levels.
