Saudi Arabia transforms passport and civil status services through digital evolution

Saudi Arabia's passport and civil status sectors have undergone a century-long transformation, evolving from manual handwritten records to advanced digital platforms. The process began in 1343 AH with basic population registration and the establishment of offices to monitor foreign residents.

Key administrative milestones include the separation of these sectors from the Public Security Directorate in 1380 AH, and their subsequent split into two independent administrative bodies—the General Directorate of Civil Status and the General Directorate of Passports—in 1402 AH.

This evolution has culminated in a comprehensive digital shift, utilizing electronic linking and modern technologies to reduce transaction times and minimize the need for in-person visits. These advancements align with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to enhance government service efficiency and improve the overall quality of life for citizens, residents, and visitors.
