DP World to build new Fujairah port to bypass Strait of Hormuz
DP World, the Dubai‑controlled port operator, is in talks with UAE authorities to develop a multipurpose port and a new container terminal on the eastern coast of the Emirates at Fujairah. The project aims to create an alternative export route via the Gulf of Oman, allowing containers to enter and leave the UAE without transiting the Strait of Hormuz and then be trucked to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other Gulf markets. It is intended to reduce the emirate’s dependence on the Jebel Ali hub, whose traffic fell by 90‑95 % after Iran closed the strait following the February war. Initial investment is expected to run into hundreds of millions of dollars, with construction potentially completed within about 18 months. DP World says the new facilities will complement, not replace, Jebel Ali, and are part of a broader UAE strategy to diversify logistics and safeguard trade against regional tensions.
