Saudi Arabia restores East-West Pipeline flows amid shifting oil market dynamics
Saudi Arabia has restored oil flows through its strategic 1,200-km East-West Pipeline to 5.8 million barrels per day following a recent drone attack. The pipeline, which connects eastern oil fields to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, serves as a critical alternative to the Strait of Hormuz, carrying between 4% and 5% of the global oil supply.
The disruption to Saudi exports has caused significant shifts in the global energy market. European refiners seeking alternatives to medium-sour Saudi crude have driven the price of Norway’s Johan Sverdrup crude to a record US$24 per barrel premium over Brent. This surge in demand for North Sea grades is expected to provide a substantial cashflow windfall for the Johan Sverdrup field's partners.
Additionally, rising global tanker costs are altering trade economics. While West African producers face high shipping expenses, Libya maintains a geographic advantage due to its proximity to Mediterranean refineries. However, Libyan freight costs have also seen increases, rising from a September average of $35.34 per tonne to $63.49 per tonne in early October.
