Saudi Arabia energy investments mitigated global economic shocks

At the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Saudi Finance Minister Mohammed Al-Jadaan stated that Saudi Arabia’s energy investments helped limit the impact of the global energy crisis. He noted that these investments, alongside structural reforms and financial buffers, have strengthened the Kingdom’s ability to navigate regional uncertainty.

Al-Jadaan highlighted that most Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are better positioned to withstand economic disruptions than other economies in the Middle East and North Africa due to proactive structural reforms. However, IMF projections suggest that regional conflicts could lead to economic contractions across five GCC states, with some facing downturns exceeding 10 percent due to disruptions in maritime trade and oil and gas exports.

During the meetings, the IMF announced the extension of Al-Jadaan’s chairmanship of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) until January 2028. Discussions also addressed the risks of rising sovereign debt, the impact of artificial intelligence on growth, and the necessity of maintaining central bank independence to ensure price stability.
