Saudi Arabia has announced the operational launch of the Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition (MMDC), a military alliance designed to safeguard freedom of navigation and global supply chains. The announcement followed a third planning meeting held in Jeddah, attended by representatives from 39 countries.

To date, 15 countries have signed a joint declaration to establish the coalition, with 13 nations having completed all necessary national procedures to officially join. The alliance aims to focus its security efforts on the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Aden to counter maritime threats and protect international trade routes.

Regarding the command structure, Saudi Arabia will provide the coalition commander, with Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Salem Al-Shehri having been appointed to the role. Pakistan will serve as the first deputy commander for the initial term. The coalition is currently moving toward institutional and operational activation, which includes integrating officers and personnel from member states into joint command, maritime operations, and intelligence centers.
