Saudi medical team successfully separates Tanzanian conjoined twins
A specialized medical team from the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program has successfully completed the separation of Tanzanian twins, Laitiens and Lovenes, at King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital in Riyadh.
The twins, aged two years and two months, were joined at the pelvis and hips. They shared the lower intestine, spine, lumbar vertebrae, and spinal cord, while possessing four lower limbs. The complex procedure was conducted in nine stages over a period of 14.5 hours.
Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, stated that 44 specialists and medical staff participated in the surgery to ensure precision and safety. This marks the fourth successful separation of twins from Tanzania and the 75th case handled by the Saudi program, which has treated 160 twins from 29 countries since its inception.
