Saudi Siamese Twin Program surgical operations

Overview

The Saudi Siamese Twin Program has continued its series of complex surgical separations at the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in Riyadh.

In mid-October, a multidisciplinary team of 34 specialists completed a nine-stage procedure to separate 13-month-old Fijian twins, Jospili and Desisia. The twins shared several vital organs, including the liver, intestines, and urinary system. This operation represented the first case handled by the program from the Republic of Fiji.

By late October, the program performed its 75th successful case, involving two-year-old twins from Tanzania, Laitiens and Lovenes. These twins were joined at the pelvis and hips, sharing the spine and spinal cord. This procedure involved 44 specialists and was conducted over 14.5 hours. Since its inception in 1990, the program has treated 160 twins from 29 different countries.
