Mecca Pact officials meet in Tehran to discuss regional security FAST-MOVING

Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan are meeting with Iranian leaders in Tehran to discuss regional security and coordination. The delegation includes Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, and Turkish Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalin. They are scheduled to meet with Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

The meeting follows the signing of the Mecca Defence Alliance in August, a pact between Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan which stipulates that an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all. This high-level contact marks the first major meeting between Iran and the alliance members following increased tensions, including missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement in Yemen.

Iranian officials, represented by Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, framed the talks as a step toward establishing a regional security framework driven by local actors. The discussions aim to promote de-escalation and diplomatic solutions amid ongoing regional instability involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
