Louis Leidert narrowly avoids car collision during SauerlandRundfahrt

Safety concerns in professional cycling have resurfaced following an incident at the SauerlandRundfahrt in Germany. During the opening 13.7-kilometer time trial, 21-year-old Louis Leidert of Lidl-Trek Future Racing narrowly avoided a collision when a vehicle appeared unexpectedly around a bend, driving in the opposite direction of the race.

Leidert was able to swerve to avoid the car, which reportedly mounted a curb to clear the path, but he subsequently encountered a second vehicle at a junction near his racing line. While no physical injuries were reported, the incident has sparked intense criticism regarding course control and security protocols.

The event is particularly sensitive as it occurred less than a month after the death of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, who was killed during the Volta a Portugal after colliding with a non-race vehicle. The recurring presence of unauthorized vehicles on closed race routes continues to be a major point of contention for fans and officials alike.
