SauerlandRundfahrt cycling race safety incidents

The SauerlandRundfahrt cycling race was scheduled to begin in early September, with initial reports focusing on logistical preparations and temporary road closures in Arnsberg, Rumbeck, and Oeventrop for the race stages.

Following the start of the event, safety concerns emerged during the opening 13.7-kilometre time trial. Rider Louis Leidert, a 21-year-old with Lidl-Trek Future Racing, encountered two unauthorized vehicles on the course. Leidert narrowly avoided a collision when a car appeared unexpectedly around a bend driving in the opposite direction; the vehicle reportedly mounted a curb to clear his path. He subsequently encountered a second vehicle at a junction near his racing line.

Although Leidert escaped without physical injury, the incident has sparked intense criticism regarding course control and security protocols. The event is viewed with heightened sensitivity following the recent death of British cyclist Finlay Tarling, who was killed during the Volta a Portugal after colliding with a non-race vehicle. The recurring presence of unauthorized vehicles on closed race routes remains a major point of contention for officials and fans.
