India and Nepal hit by deadly floods and landslides
Severe rainfall, floods, and landslides have caused widespread devastation across northern India and Nepal, resulting in at least 70 deaths. In India, 56 fatalities were reported in the state of Uttar Pradesh, where rainfall levels reached 66.5mm—nearly nine times the seasonal average. The flooding in India has damaged over 1,000 homes and injured at least 46 people. Major rivers, including the Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati, and Narmada, have risen above danger levels, prompting severe weather warnings across seven states.
In Nepal, at least 14 deaths have been confirmed, with several people reported missing. Landslides have been a primary cause of death in the region. The extreme weather has severely impacted infrastructure, causing power outages in districts such as Manang, Mustang, Myagdi, and Baglung, and disrupting telecommunications due to damaged fiber-optic cables. Additionally, flooding on the Rahuganga River damaged a 40-megawatt hydropower project and its transmission towers.
Authorities in Nepal have issued flash-flood warnings for 49 of the country's 77 districts. Rescue operations are ongoing as officials assess damage to agriculture and critical transport routes, including several major highways that have been blocked by landslides.
