Donald Trump urges Senate to delay August recess until SAVE America Act passes
President Donald Trump publicly demanded that Senate Majority Leader John Thune cancel the Senate’s scheduled August recess until the SAVE America Act is approved. Trump posted on Truth Social that Thune should not let the chamber “leave town” until the voting‑integrity bill passes, and added that ending the filibuster would allow Republicans to quickly pass the bill and other priorities.
The SAVE America Act would require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration and a photo ID for casting ballots in federal elections. The Senate, with a 53‑47 Republican majority, needs 60 votes to overcome the filibuster, a hurdle Thune says Republicans do not have. He has also said there is no viable path to using budget reconciliation for the bill.
A small group of GOP senators – including Mike Lee, Rick Scott, Ashley Moody, Jim Banks and Darline Graham – have echoed Trump’s call to cancel the recess or eliminate the filibuster. The House recently approved a budget framework that includes $10 billion for voting‑related changes aligned with the SAVE America Act.
Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have labelled the legislation dead on arrival and warned it would suppress voters. The Senate’s August recess is set to begin on Aug. 7, 2026, a timing that coincides with the start of campaign season for the 2026 midterm elections.
