Savica Lakes: Divers remove 800kg of waste in ecological cleanup

Divers from the Adriaticro Zagreb Diving Club conducted a large-scale ecological cleanup at the Savica lakes in Zagreb. As part of the ‘Sanacija ornitološkog staništa S. O. S. Savica 2026’ project, participants removed approximately 800 kilograms of waste from the water.

Between 40 and 56 divers participated in the operation, which included using specialized equipment to survey the lake bed. A specific focus of this year's action was the removal of discarded fishing lines, which pose a significant entanglement risk to local swan populations.

The Savica lakes are a complex ecosystem comprising twelve interconnected bodies of water that serve as a vital habitat for various plant and animal species, particularly birds. Organizers noted that while the volume of large, bulky waste has decreased in recent years, the continued removal of debris and the clearing of water passages are essential for maintaining oxygen levels and water circulation necessary for the survival of aquatic life.
