Sawan 2026: Auspicious Plants and Major Festivals Mark Hindu Monsoon Celebrations

During the Hindu monsoon month of Sawan 2026, which runs from 30 July to the full moon on 28 August, devotees observe a range of religious customs. Traditional guidance recommends planting five auspicious species – Belpatra, Tulsi, Shami, Money plant and Ashok – in specific directions to invite positive energy, divine blessings and prosperity. Belpatra is placed in the north or east, Tulsi in the north/east/northeast, Shami on a balcony or outdoors in the east or north, Money plant in the southeast, and Ashok near the entrance or in the north.

The month also features five major festivals. Shiv Ratri is celebrated on 11 August, followed by Hariyali Tej on 15 August, Nag Panchami on 17 August, Raksha Bandhan on the full‑moon day 28 August, and the Kavad Yatra pilgrimage that runs throughout Sawan. Additionally, fasting Mondays on 3, 10, 17 and 24 August are considered especially meritorious.
