Sawan Shivratri 2026 scheduled for August 11

Sawan Shivratri 2026 is scheduled to be celebrated on August 11, 2026. According to astrological calculations, the Chaturdashi तिथि begins on the morning of August 11 and ends on the night of August 12. Although the Bhadra period is expected to last from the morning of August 11 until 3:22 PM, religious texts suggest that Bhadra does not pose an obstacle for the worship and Jal Abhishek of Lord Shiva.

Devotees are encouraged to perform rituals such as Jal Abhishek with milk, honey, and Ganga water, offering Belpatra, Dhatura, and sandalwood. Significant practices include four-stage (Prahara) worship throughout the night, night vigils (Jagran), lighting lamps, and donating food or clothes to the needy.

In comparison to Mahashivratri, which celebrates the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, Sawan Shivratri occurs during the holy month of Sawan and is focused on intense devotion. The spiritual essence of the festival is also reflected in the symbolism of Lord Shiva consuming poison to protect creation, serving as a metaphor for modern challenges like intolerance, hatred, and social discord.
