Leipzig police hunt dangerous man escaped from psychiatric facility

Police in Saxony are conducting an extensive manhunt for Muhamad M., a 22-year-old man who escaped from a forensic psychiatric facility in Altscherbitz, near Leipzig, on Friday, September 25, 2026. The escape occurred around 4:00 PM during a supervised walk on the clinic grounds.

Muhamad M. was held in the facility following a ruling by the Leipzig Regional Court in July 2026, which ordered his permanent placement due to a diagnosis of schizophrenia. He had previously been held provisionally since 2025. The escape follows a violent incident in August 2025, where he allegedly stabbed a man in the chest and lung during a mobile phone robbery on Leipzig's Eisenbahnstraße.

Authorities warn that the individual poses a significant danger to the public. He is described as approximately 1.78 meters tall with a slender build, a black spiked hairstyle, and a full beard. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a light blue windbreaker, blue jeans, and sneakers. He is a native Persian speaker with limited German proficiency. Police believe he may still be in the Leipzig area and urge anyone with information to contact emergency services immediately.
