Saxony's renewable energy support falls; noisy wind turbine dismantled

A survey of about 1,500 residents in Saxony finds backing for renewable power sources fell from 64 % in 2021 to 56 %, and overall support for the Energiewende dropped from 49 % to 43 %. Small‑scale solar and hydropower remain popular, while large wind farms near homes receive markedly less approval. About 73 % favor hydropower, and 41 % support nuclear energy.

In the town of Oberwiera in the Zwickau district, a 170‑metre, €10 million wind turbine that entered service at the end of 2023 is being dismantled after persistent noise complaints from locals. The three rotor blades have been removed and the tower remains. The operator and manufacturer Vestas agreed to the removal, though costs were not disclosed. Mayor Holger Quellmalz has expressed opposition to any future turbines in the 1,000‑inhabitant community. The case is described as unique in Germany, highlighting growing public resistance to certain wind projects.
