Researchers analysing German municipalities found that the mere visibility of wind turbines reduces voter support for parties advocating renewable‑energy expansion, with the effect strongest in recent years and in rural areas. Local perceptions of fairness and direct economic benefits can mitigate this backlash.

A later survey in Saxony showed a measurable decline in overall backing for the Energiewende and for large‑scale wind farms, falling from 64 % to 56 % support for renewables between 2021 and 2023. The survey was underscored by the dismantling of a 170‑metre turbine in Oberwiera after persistent noise complaints, marking a concrete instance of local resistance translating into project removal.

Together, the findings illustrate a growing pattern of public scepticism toward prominent wind projects in Germany, prompting calls for more equitable benefit sharing and heightened community involvement in the energy transition.
