Brazil unveils 2024‑2034 Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy as SBPC fair convenes
The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) approved the National Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation for 2024‑2034 through Portaria No. 10.226 on 28 July. The strategy will serve as the primary planning instrument for formulating, implementing, monitoring and evaluating policies, programmes, projects and actions in the sector. A working group coordinated by the ministry’s executive secretariat, with members from the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and CAPES, will draft an Action Plan for 2027‑2031, detailing initiatives, goals and practical actions within 120 days.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva attended the 78th annual meeting of the Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência (SBPC) in Niterói on 28 July, urging greater investment in science and innovation and referencing the ten‑year plan. The SBPC gathering, held at the University Federal Fluminense (UFF) campus, is the largest scientific event in Latin America, running from 27 July to 1 August with around 50 000 participants. The accompanying ExpoT&C fair featured 67 exhibitors, including the University Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) showcasing 3D printers, submarines, rockets and an aeromodel weighing 4.5 kg capable of carrying 9‑10 kg. The Fundação de Apoio à Pesquisa da Paraíba (Fapesq) presented the Radiotelescópio Bingo, the first Latin‑American radiotelescope designed to detect Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, located in Aguiar, Paraíba.
