Scammers Deploy Automated Silent Calls to Verify Phone Numbers

Fraudsters are using automated dialing software, known as autodialers, to place silent telephone calls to random numbers worldwide. The system records whether a call is answered, creating a database of active phone lines that can be sold on the dark web. These verified numbers are then used for a range of scams, including impersonating banks, police, or relatives to steal personal data, login credentials, one‑time passwords, or money.

Experts advise that callers should avoid answering calls from unknown numbers. If a silent call is received, the recommendation is to disconnect immediately, refrain from calling back, and block the number. Remaining cautious helps prevent the collection of voice samples that could be exploited for further fraudulent activity.
