Silent Call Phone Scam Verification

In early July, fraudsters were reported to be employing automated dialing software (autodialers) to place completely silent calls to random numbers worldwide. When a call was answered, the system logged the number as active and compiled a database of verified lines, which could be sold on the dark web for use in impersonation scams targeting banks, police, or relatives.

By late July, the same “Silent Call” tactic was described in more detail. Scammers let the call ring, then remain silent, prompting a brief “Hello?” that confirms the line’s activity and provides a voice sample. This data is sold on dark‑net forums and can be exploited for AI‑generated voice cloning and vishing attacks. Security firm Bitdefender urged users to hang up immediately, avoid responding, block the number and report the call. The report also listed consumer tools—Google searches, reverse‑lookup services and apps such as Clever Dialer—to help identify unknown callers and filter potential fraud.

Both snapshots highlight a growing reliance on silent‑call verification to harvest phone numbers and voice data, with advice focusing on non‑engagement and the use of caller‑identification services to mitigate the threat.
