Scammers use video calls to target elderly victims in Italy
Scammers are increasingly using sophisticated methods, including video calls and artificial intelligence, to target victims. In a recent incident in Arluno, Italy, two fraudsters used a video call to gain the trust of an elderly woman. One perpetrator, posing as a law enforcement officer, showed his face during the call and falsely claimed her car license plate had been cloned and used in a robbery.
The scammers convinced the woman they needed to visit her home for verification. Once at her residence, the individual and an accomplice gained entry and persuaded her to reveal the combination to her safe, from which they stole all her jewelry.
The Carabinieri have issued a warning following the incident, urging citizens—particularly the elderly—to remain vigilant. Authorities advise contacting emergency services immediately if individuals posing as police officers request money or valuables during phone calls or home visits.
